2014 CrossFit Games Masters 7th Fittest in the World/Outrigger Canoe Paddleboard World Champ/Fighter Pilot
Passions: CrossFit & Outrigger Canoe Paddling
Philosophy: "The pain won't last forever, but the memory will."
There's a reason Matt Beals is known throughout the CrossFit world as "Captain America." First, he looks like a super hero. And he is an all American hero. Matt is a Hawaii Air National Guard fighter pilot and world champion outrigger canoe paddler.
Matt teamed up with his good friend and Paralympian/Wheelchair athlete John Maclean to set a two-man canoe paddling world record in the 2010 OC-2 Molokai crossing. That's when he got turned on to CrossFit. Inspired by his Grandfather, WWII vet and part of the Greatest Generation, Matt explains his need to find a new athletic challenge with a quote. "Without a battle at hand a true warrior would surely die; therefore he must forever find a new war to wage." "That's how I found CrossFit, and how I will find the next challenge." He just placed 22nd in the Masters Qualifier Regionals for the 2015 CrossFit Games, after winning his division in the Worldwide Open NorCal Region for the 3rd year in a row.
